Participants will learn the basics of whitewater kayak outfitting, fit and manuvering. This course is taught by a certified whitewater kayak instructor.

Participants must provide their own equipment. If you do not have equipment, please reach out to Ryan.wiegman@cityofsalida.com and Salida Recreation and FIBArk will do our best to find you equipment. Required equipment includes;

- Kayak
- Kayak Skirt
- Whitewater Helmet
- Lifejacket (PFD)
- Paddle

Kayak roll sessions are available to the public to practice water-based kayak skills during the winter months! Bring your canoe or kayak and work on rolling, tricks, or basic maneuvering. Kayak roll sessions are NOT instructed and helmets, PFDs, and the ability to demonstrate a wet exit are required.

• Reservations required
• 10 years or older
• PFD and helmets must be worn while kayaking
• Helmets must be worn while instructing 
• Boats must be washed out before entering the water
• Boats must enter and exit the water on the blue/black mats
• Do not push paddles off the bottom of the pool
• Do not crash boats into walls
• No swimming during the kayak roll session
• $15 drop-in or Kayak Access Pass

FIBArk and Salida Parks and Recreation have teamed up to bring you this intermediate kayaking course as part of FIBArk's Community Paddling Program.

Participants in this course will work on the fundamentals of playboating with specialized instruction in advanced techniques. This course is taught by a certified whitewater kayak instructor and an excellent playboater, Aran Kilroy.

Participants must provide their own equipment. If you do not have equipment, please reach out to anissa.caiazza@cityofsalida.com and Salida Recreation and FIBArk will do our best to find you equipment. Required equipment includes;

- Playboat
- Kayak Skirt
- Whitewater Helmet

Setting up for the FIBArk festival

Registration opens 14 days before each session and closes 30 minutes before the start of each session.

FIBArk, and Salida Parks and Recreation have teamed up to bring you open SUP time at the Salida Hot Springs Aquatic Center. Start training for the open water season and bring your own Stand Up Paddleboard equipment to practice your techniques. Limited space is available, so please register to secure your spot. 

This course will give an overview of basic river hydrology and how to use river features to your advantage while in the moving water. Basic moves like the eddy turn, ferry, and peel-outs are covered as well as how to handle small river obstacles. This is a great course for applying your flat water skills to the moving water or tuning up your basic river maneuvers on Class 1-2 rapids.

Equipment is provided, including all SUP gear and dry equipment/wetsuits. Participants may bring their own SUP, PFD, and helmet and are allowed to use them if they meet the instructor's standards.

The lesson will start with river swimming practice (defensive and aggressive positions, into and out of the current), including how to receive a throwbag if necessary for rescue. Learn the applications of a board leash and how to properly use one, and the finer points of board design and what makes a board practical for surfing. The instructor will teach and demonstrate strategies for catching and riding a wave, on land and in the water. Since the lesson is shore-based and not traveling downriver, students can participate up to their comfort level and spend time observing others surfing.  Catch a wave on the Arkansas River! There is really nothing more fun on a hot day than carving turns on the local waves. 

Equipment is provided, including all SUP gear and dry equipment/wetsuits. Participants may bring their own SUP, PFD, and helmet and are allowed to use them if they meet the instructor's standards.

This class for 3rd-8th graders is a full day of fun-packed adventure and learning on the river with Canyon River Instruction. During a day of paddle rafting on the Arkansas River, kids will learn the basics of river safety, such as how to safely swim through rapids, how to pull themselves back in a raft, recognize and avoid hazards, and how to help rescue their friends!

Equipment is provided. Kids are welcome to use their own PFD & helmet as long as they are whitewater appropriate.

This class for 3rd-8th graders is a full day of fun-packed adventure and learning on the river with Canyon River Instruction. During a day of paddle rafting on the Arkansas River, kids will learn the basics of river safety, such as how to safely swim through rapids, how to pull themselves back in a raft, recognize and avoid hazards, and how to help rescue their friends!

Equipment is provided. Kids are welcome to use their own PFD & Helmet as long as they are whitewater appropriate.

Equipment is provided, including all kayaking gear and dry equipment/wetsuits. Participants may bring their own kayak, PFD, and helmet and are allowed to use them if they meet the instructor's standards.
