City Invests in Local Non-profits

Did you know that Salida allocates 1% of the City’s annual general fund sales tax revenue for charitable giving? Each year, the City works with the Chaffee County Community Foundation (CCCF) to administer a Donor Advised Fund on the City’s behalf. This Fund allows the City to provide funding to local non-profit groups that provide community services in line with the City’s mission and goals.

This year, the CCCF distributed $90,046 of the City’s tax revenue to 31 deserving non-profits in the community. The CCCF utilizes a Grant Review Committee and formal process to review applications and make funding recommendations on behalf of the City. Twenty-eight of the applicants were also awarded funding by the Town of Buena Vista with a total community investment of $146,686.

Organizations were evaluated on their total impact - not on the impact of a particular project. The review consisted of a scoring process in which an application was scored based on the merits of its own application in comparison to the rubric. During the scoring process and during a follow-up meeting, the committee identified questions to ask the applicant to clarify information from their application. Following the interviews, the committee compared the applicants and awarded funds based on the impact of the organizations. This process was incredibly competitive, with many applicants submitting high-quality applications. The committee sought to fund high-impact projects through meaningful grants. Not all applicants could be funded due to budget considerations, but the Grant Review Committee conducted a careful and thorough review of all applications.
