Cheers to 29 Years of Dedicated Service

After 29 years of service to the Salida Fire Department, Chief Doug Bess said farewell on October 31. Over the last three decades, Chief Bess worked to keep the City safe for those who have lived, worked, and visited. Born and raised in Salida, Bess returned to his hometown in 1992 and began work as a volunteer firefighter in the community.

In 1994, Bess was offered a full-time job as a firefighter and then was quickly promoted to Captain of A-shift two years later. He held this position for eighteen years before being promoted to Fire Chief in July 2012.

Chief Bess's favorite memories and accomplishments include ensuring firefighters in Salida had the tools and resources to perform their jobs effectively and safely. "I am proud of the work that was put in to increase staffing and provide firefighters with a comparable wage as they were severely underpaid for many years," he added.

Bess says he's also proud of the coordination, design, and oversight of the Salida Multi-Use Facility and the extensive effort to design and get funding for the new firehouse that broke ground last week and will be under construction soon.

In addition to guiding the department, Bess said his biggest accomplishment was securing a State Historical Grant and raising funds to restore the City's 1911 Kissel Fire Engine. "This rolling piece of history is a testament to the steeped tradition of the Salida Fire Department and will live on for many more generations to enjoy," Bess explained.

In retirement, Bess says he's looking forward to less stress and more family time with his grandkids, traveling, and enjoying the outdoors! As he reflects on his career in Salida, he said, "I truly enjoyed serving in the town I was born and raised in. As a member of the fire service, you get to help people on their worst days, and when you can make their day a little better, it's the best feeling in the world."

Interim City Administrator Christy Doon said, "I've known Doug for more than 10 years; he has been a true mentor and friend, and I am honored to have worked with him. All of us at the City of Salida wish him the very best in retirement!"
