West SH-291 Improvement Project
Phase 1 Infrastructure Construction
The City is moving forward with improvements along West SH-291, a vital corridor connecting neighborhoods, parks, and community destinations in Salida. This multi-phase project will enhance safety, accessibility, and infrastructure reliability while preparing the corridor to serve our growing community.
Construction Timeline and Impact
Construction will take place in two phases.
- Phase 1 Start Date: March 2026
- Phase 1 Work: Installation of utilities and improvements to street and drainage
- Anticipated completion of Phase 1: End of 2026
- Phase 2 (proposed): 2027
Phase 1: M Street to Mesa Lane
Project Area:
From Mesa Lane to M Street east of Marvin Park. Work along 1st Street will extend up to, but not include, Mesa Lane.
What’s Included
Phase 1 focuses on both underground utility upgrades and surface improvements:
Utility Improvements (4–6 weeks)
- Replacement of aging water and sewer infrastructure
- Modernized systems to improve reliability and reduce future maintenance needs
Street & Drainage Improvements
- New sidewalks for improved pedestrian access
- Dedicated bike lanes
- New curb and gutter
- Storm sewer upgrades to improve drainage and reduce flooding concerns
Impacts to Marvin Park & Surrounding Areas
Construction near Marvin Park may temporarily disrupt activities, including T-Ball and other youth programming. The City will coordinate closely with user groups to minimize impacts as much as possible.
When First Street is closed, access to parking lots will be available via O Street and N Street.
During construction, crews will provide clearly marked detours and safe routes for pedestrians and vehicles accessing the Sands Lake area.
Phase 2: Mesa Lane to Rush Drive (Proposed for 2027)
Phase 2 will continue the corridor improvements westward and include:
- Construction of a new roundabout at Mesa Lane
- Extension of bike lanes, sidewalks, curb and gutter
- Continued storm drainage and utility upgrades
Like Phase 1, this portion of the project will improve safety, mobility, and infrastructure performance along West SH-291.
Funding & Partnerships
The West SH-291 Improvement Project is supported by a grant from the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), helping bring critical infrastructure investments to this important gateway corridor.
