Salida, Co- Construction on the South Ark Neighborhood Infrastructure Phase I project has been underway for the past several months, with significant progress made on site preparation and water main extensions along the US-50 corridor. The project will provide the essential utilities and infrastructure needed to support future workforce housing development in the area.
As construction continues, portions of the nearby open space and trail corridor remain temporarily closed due to active work zones, heavy equipment, and open trenches. The City anticipates reopening the lower open space area to the public by mid-summer once this phase of construction is complete.
The City would like to reassure residents that the general area currently used as open space will remain open space following completion of the infrastructure work. In addition, trail improvements are underway, including paving upgrades along the corridor near the Hampton Inn and improvements across the bridge connection to enhance accessibility and safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
As a reminder, municipal code requires that dogs remain on leash within the open space area and trail corridor. Residents and visitors are encouraged to follow posted signage and safety guidance while construction is ongoing.
The disc golf area will remain accessible throughout most of construction via access from County Road 104. There may be a couple of holes impacted by the construction and the City appreciates your patience as construction is completed in that area.
This project is supported through a strong partnership of state, local, and City investments focused on expanding workforce housing opportunities in Salida. The City received $4 million through the State of Colorado’s Strong Communities and More Housing Now initiatives to fund critical infrastructure improvements needed for future housing development. In addition, Chaffee County and Colorado Mountain College have each committed up to $1 million toward the project, while the City has contributed $1.25 million from its Housing Fund, supported by occupational lodging tax revenues specifically dedicated to workforce housing initiatives. Together, these investments represent a coordinated community effort to create attainable housing opportunities for the local workforce and support Salida’s long-term housing goals.
The City appreciates the community’s patience as this important infrastructure work moves forward.
